RV Types & Categories
What are the different Motorhome types?
- Class A (The "Bus"): Built on a heavy-duty chassis, these offer the most luxury, storage, and residential amenities (like washer/dryers and full-size fridges). They feature a massive panoramic windshield and are ideal for long-term travel or "snowbirding."
- Class B (The "Van"): Also known as Camper Vans, these are the smallest and easiest to drive. They fit in standard parking spots and offer great fuel efficiency. Perfect for couples who want to be nimble and explore cities or off-grid locations.
- Class C (The "Cab-Over"): Recognizable by the bunk over the driver's cab, these offer a balance of living space and maneuverability. They often sleep more people than Class Bs, making them a top choice for families needing extra bunks without the size of a Class A.
What is the difference between a Travel Trailer and a 5th Wheel?
Travel Trailers connect to a ball hitch on your vehicle's rear bumper. They are the most common RV type because they come in a huge variety of weights and sizes, many of which can be towed by SUVs and light-duty trucks.
5th Wheels connect to a special "jaw" hitch installed in the bed of a pickup truck (directly over the rear axle). This setup provides superior towing stability, reduced sway, and allows for "split-level" floorplans with much higher ceilings and spacious living areas.
What is a Toy Hauler RV?
A Toy Hauler (available as a Travel Trailer or 5th Wheel) is designed for the active outdoor enthusiast. It features a heavy-duty rear ramp door that opens into a "garage" area for loading ATVs, dirt bikes, motorcycles, or kayaks.
Once your toys are unloaded, the garage space transforms into extra living space, often featuring drop-down electric beds or dining sofas. They are built with reinforced frames to handle the extra cargo weight.
What is a Truck Camper?
A Truck Camper is a demountable RV unit designed to slide into the bed of a pickup truck. This is the ultimate "go-anywhere" RV, allowing you to camp in tight off-road spots where trailers can't fit.
Because the RV is carried rather than towed, your hitch remains free, allowing you to tow a boat, horse trailer, or ATV trailer behind you. They are popular for hunting, fishing, and overland exploration.
